The Meaning of Deferral
Getting Things DoneThe book develops deferral as a deliberate, reviewable choice rather than an ambiguous pile of forgotten intentions.

Not Everything Is Now

A Place for Later
Present Action Has Limits
Some ideas and opportunities are not ready for action, even if they may matter in the future. A person may lack time, information, or inclination to commit now.
The absence of immediate action does not make the item worthless.
Two Forms of Holding
A person can keep a possibility on a future list or place a dated reminder where it will reappear. The appropriate method depends on whether the item needs periodic review or a specific future trigger.
Deferral needs a structure that distinguishes it from neglect.
Possibilities Are Captured

The Back Burner Is Inventoried
Creative Options Remain Alive
Possible trips, skills, projects, purchases, and experiences can be recorded without becoming active commitments. The list preserves the option while removing it from the immediate action inventory.
The person can continue having ideas without promising to pursue each one now.
Capture Can Inspire
Allen suggests that an existing list may prompt new possibilities and make a person more likely to recognize opportunities when they appear. Recording a possibility can shape future attention.
Deferral becomes an act of preserving choice rather than abandoning imagination.
The Hold Pile Goes Numb

Storage Without Awareness
The Catchall Problem
A “hold and review” pile may contain trash, reference, reading, calendar reminders, actions, and future possibilities all mixed together. Its owner may intend to inspect it someday but rarely does.
Without clear categories, the pile becomes psychologically indistinct.
A Lost Promise
The material remains stored but is not reliably reconsidered. The person cannot trust that an important option will resurface at a useful moment.
The book warns that organization without review may merely relocate the burden.
Review Restores the Option

Future Choices Return to View
Reassessing Interest
The person reviews deferred items and decides whether any should now become active. Others can remain on hold or be deleted when they no longer matter.
The review gives each possibility a chance to meet the present conditions.
Safe Noncommitment
A person can knowingly postpone an item and still feel confident that it will be reconsidered. This is different from forgetting it or keeping it as an unexamined source of pressure.
Deferral becomes a managed agreement with the future.
Freedom to Choose Returns

Possibility Without Pressure
More Room for the Present
The person can retain interesting ambitions without requiring immediate action on all of them. The current workload remains distinct from the larger field of things that might someday be pursued.
This separation protects attention while preserving aspiration.
A Dynamic Future
As circumstances change, an item can move from possibility to project or be released entirely. The system does not decide for the person; it creates a reliable moment for deciding again.
The theme resolves in a disciplined freedom to choose what becomes real.
